The SouthernSun SMID Cap strategy takes a private-equity like approach to investing and seeks to achieve long-term capital appreciation by investing primarily in stocks of small to mid capitalization U.S. companies. The Investment Team looks for attractively valued companies with the following three characteristics: 1) Financial Flexibility 2) Management Adaptability, and 3) Niche Dominance. The team conducts extensive fundamental research and due diligence that includes on-site company visits and dialogue with company management. This research-driven, value-oriented approach results in a concentrated portfolio of 20-30 small to mid capitalization U.S. companies.

- We take a long-term approach to investing. Our firm believes that companies need time to fix their problems that made their stock valuations anemic. Therefore, one should anticipate MPMG embracing an investment for 4-6 years (assuming no deterioration in fundamentals). This allows companies time to realize full valuation potential.
- Our portfolio managers are very selective, typically 30 or fewer companies make it into the strategy at any given time. Newly opened accounts should expect a slightly higher cash position and fewer names to start as we feel the risk/reward ratio for securing a holding may not be as favorable at time of inception as it was previously.
- MPMG takes a relatively unconstrained approach to diversify among market capitalizations, industries, sectors, and geographic locations. We believe being benchmark agnostic allows us the freedom to go where the most promising investment opportunities are along with avoiding the excesses of herd mentality.
