5 Signals: Is Your Firm Ready for 2027–28?
Five minutes, applied across your advisor team's client list. If more than one sounds like a meaningful slice of your firm, those accounts need to start banking losses now.
- 1.A client has a business sale, liquidity event, or exit under active discussion for 2027 or 2028.
- 2.A client's RSUs, ESPP shares, or other equity comp have a vesting cliff landing in the next one to two years.
- 3.A client is planning a Roth conversion or expects a distribution that will land in a higher bracket year.
- 4.A client holds a low-basis legacy position they already know will need to come down as part of a planned transition, not just a routine rebalance.
- 5.Your team doesn't currently have a clear view of which accounts are carrying enough banked losses to offset a gain event when it lands.
If two or more of these sound like a meaningful slice of your firm, that's usually the answer. The firms that get the most value here aren't waiting for a client to raise it first.
OrionIs This Worth Raising This Season?
If your team can't say with confidence which accounts are already positioned for a 2027 or 2028 gain event, and which aren't, that's usually the answer.

Custom Indexing offered through Orion Portfolio Solutions, LLC a registered investment advisor.
Custom Indexing is an investment strategy wherein a portfolio is managed to mimic an index or other portfolio, while taking into account the tax position, holdings, and individual investing preferences of a client. The performance of a portfolio using custom indexing may vary significantly from the target index (referred to as tracking error or tracking difference), and this variance may increase with greater customization within a portfolio.

Tax-loss Harvesting is a process by which securities trading at unrealized losses are sold to realize a taxable loss. Proceeds from the sales are then used to reinvest in alternate securities to maintain market exposure. Tax-loss Harvesting can be used as a strategy to offset realized gains from other investments and/or carried forward to later calendar years to offset future taxable gains.
